FBI confirms identity of gunman in ‘terrorism-related’ shooting at Texas naval base

The man who shot a guard at a Texas naval air station has been identified as Adam Salim Alsahli.

The FBI’s Houston field office confirmed in a Friday afternoon tweet the identity of the 20-year-old shooter, who injured one guard before being shot dead by authorities.

“Now that next of kin has been notified, the FBI officially confirms that the suspect in Thursday’s #CorpusNASShooting has been identified as 20 year old Adam Salim Alsahli,” the tweet said.

The FBI said the Thursday shooting at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi was terrorism-related, and there may be another person of interest who is still at large.

The incident occurred Thursday at about 6:15 a.m. when Alsahli drove through a gate before being stopped by vehicle barriers, authorities said. He got out of the car and began shooting. One sailor was shot by Alsahli but was saved by her bulletproof vest.

Rita Katz, director of SITE Intelligence Group, said on Twitter that Alsahli’s social media profiles expressed support for Islamist views, including the Taliban and al Qaeda.

Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec told the Washington Examiner on Thursday that it is working with the FBI to investigate Alsahli’s attack.

“The Department of Justice’s counterterrorism section is working closely with the FBI, the U.S. Attorneys Office in SDTX, and other federal and local authorities to expeditiously investigate the circumstances of this event and all available evidence, including electronic media found at the scene,” Kupec said.

Earlier this week, Attorney General William Barr announced that Mohammed Alshamrani, the Saudi aviation student who killed three people and wounded eight more last year at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida, had ties to al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.
