CNN anchor John King told viewers on Tuesday that the problems on the U.S.-Mexico border did not start under President Trump, but have been going on for some time.
“And so I just want to remind people that under President Trump, the Democrats don’t like anything he says about immigration. He’s had problems with his own party on immigration. But this particular issue is not new. I just want to go back. This is an interview going back to 2014 with the then-Democratic president of the United States,” King said.
“There are some Democrats who come to the table and say ‘Trump created this crisis, this is all about Trump.’ It may be escalated under Trump, the numbers are certainly higher under Trump, but this has been a problem, the United States government has had to figure out a solution to for a very long time,” he added.
King then played a clip of Obama telling would-be immigrants in 2014 not to send kids to the border because the government was being overwhelmed with unaccompanied minors.
“That is five years ago this week. That’s five years ago this very week. In the sense that, again, there’s a current divide. The current president evokes emotions among Democrats. A lot of progressives weren’t happy with that president, President Obama. They called him the ‘deporter-in-chief,'” King said, adding that certain issues on the border have remained “unresolved” for “20-plus years.”
