Julian Castro: I may have to explain to Trump the difference between Mexicans and Cubans

Likely 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Julian Castro quipped he may have to explain the difference between Mexicans and Cubans to President Trump.

Castro, the former Obama-era Housing and Urban Development secretary, made the comment Monday night during his first trip to Iowa since last month forming a presidential exploratory committee.

A man attending a dinner hosted by Democratic activist group the “Potluck Insurgency” outside of Iowa City asked Castro how he would respond if Trump were to make fun of him for having the same last name as the late Cuban communist revolutionary and politician, Fidel Castro.

“I guess I would have to explain the difference between Mexican and Cuban, you know?” Julian Castro replied, according to local radio station KMA Land.

Castro, a Mexican-American who previously served as the mayor of San Antonio, also told attendees he would refuse donations from political action committees, the Des Moines Register reported.

Castro, who is set to hold a press conference in San Antonio on Saturday to discuss whether he’ll mount an official race for the White House, spent Tuesday in Nevada, another early-voting state. He is also scheduled to travel to New Hampshire next week.
