Republicans spotlight chaos in Democratic campaign arm but GOP lags behind in fundraising

Republican operatives Monday celebrated infighting at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee that has embroiled Chairwoman Cheri Bustos, of Illinois, and forced out executive director and Iraq War veteran Allison Jaslow.

“Mutiny underway at Cheri Bustos’ DCCC,” Michael McAdams, spokesman for the GOP campaign arm, said in a three-siren media blast. “What a disaster for House Democrats.”

But the DCCC has so far this year outraised their Republican counterpart, the National Republican Campaign Committee.

The DCCC raised $12.5 million in June, adding up to $61.67 million raised in the first half of 2019. The NRCC raised $9 million in June for a total haul of $44.5 million so far in 2019.

The $17 million advantage over the House GOP has done little to calm internal bickering inside the DCCC, according to reports.

Jaslow resigned Monday, on her birthday, following a hastily-planned DCCC meeting attended by Bustos, to air grievances from lawmakers and staff that the upper management of the campaign team lacks diversity.

Texas Reps. Vicente Gonzalez and Filemon Vela had called for Jaslow’s ouster, describing the DCCC “in complete chaos,” according to Politico.

The infighting began months ago after a Washington Free Beacon article that exposed a series of anti-Hispanic and homophobic tweets sent years ago by DCCC aide Tayhlor Coleman, who still works for the committee.

“The DCCC has forced a female Iraq war veteran to step down as Executive Director for not being woke enough (on her birthday, no less),” McAdams said in a statement. “But can someone please check if Tayhlor Coleman, who first created this entire uproar among Democrats after making derogatory comments against Mexicans and homophobic remarks, has also resigned?”

In a statement, Jaslow did not explain the reason for her departure.

“My commitment to the mission, our country and the people who commit their lives to serving it is unwavering,” Jaslow said. “And sometimes selfless service means having the courage to take a bow for the sake of the mission – especially when the stakes are so high.”
