New York City lifts school mask mandate for outdoor settings but keeps it indoors

New York City Public Schools announced Friday the mask mandate for schools would be modified to only include indoor settings, even as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to announce substantial relaxations to its masking guidelines.

The relaxed mask rules will take effect Monday, despite reports the CDC plans to change its guidelines on mask-wearing, including in school settings. The school district also said it would maintain most other COVID-related protocols.

“We will continue to maintain strict COVID-19 protocols, including increased ventilation, distancing when possible, a daily screener to make sure those with symptoms do not come to school, and test kit distribution,” the district said in its announcement.

New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks said in a press release he was “so pleased that we are able to make this exciting announcement and safely allow students and staff to remove their masks when outdoors at NYC public schools.”

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has so far resisted lifting the state’s school mask mandate despite lifting it for most other environments, even while several other Democrat governors have opted to expire mandates in recent weeks.
