Legendary Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight shared a laugh with Donald Trump Friday morning over Ted Cruz’s ill-fated decision to call a basketball hoop a “basketball ring” in an Indiana speech this week.
“Well, I don’t think I have,” Knight said in a “Fox and Friends” interview when asked if he’s ever heard that before.
“A guy that would come into this state and think that we played with rings instead of baskets is not a guy that’s very well prepared to do a whole hell of a lot,” Knight added as he slapped his hand on Trump’s shoulder and laughed. The interview was taped Thursday before a Trump rally in Evansville, and aired Friday morning.
Trump’s campaign is expected to benefit from Knight’s endorsement in next week’s Indiana primary, and Knight said endorsing Trump was the American thing to do.
“It was not complex. I consider myself to be more than anything else an American,” Knight explained. “And there’s nothing that I would rather do in my lifetime than do something to help the United States, and what better then to recommend this man as president.”
Knight added that the Republican presidential front-runner’s “background and the ability” is unprecedented.
