Virginia’s state and local governments collected $238 million in traffic-related revenue in fiscal year 2010, according to an audit by the Virginia Auditor of Public Accounts.
That number includes $101 million from speeding tickets, $1.8 million for safety belt violations and $30 million for reckless driving tickets.
AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesman John Townsend said the high numbers show that some local governments are milking drivers for revenue, even though the state bars the use of speed cameras.
“This enforcement for money, not for safety, undermines the credibility of law enforcement, infuriates motorists and incenses politicians,” he said.
