Michelle Obama tells men ‘to go talk to each other about your stuff’

Young men need to talk more with each other to straighten out bad behavior and work through their emotions, former first lady Michelle Obama said Wednesday.

Speaking at the Obama Foundation Summit in Chicago on Wednesday, Obama gave a talk about raising children in today’s society. In an interview with Elizabeth Alexander, a poet and a friend to Obama, she said young women are very good about talking with each other and working through their problems and men could learn a thing or two.

“Women, we do it better than men,” she said.

“Y’all should get you some friends. Get you some friends and talk to each other, ‘cause that’s the other thing we do, we straighten each other out on some things, our girlfriends. And with Barack, sometimes, I just think, ‘who are you talking to?’ … y’all need to go talk to each other about your stuff because there’s so much of it. It’s so messy. Talk about why y’all the way you are.”

During the talk, Obama dove into her past and credited her parents for playing key roles in the creation of her own voice.

She said at a very young age, her parents would ask for her input on decisions being made in their household.

It was at this time that she knew her parents “were raising adults, not children,” adding that’s very important to her because if children are to have a voice when they eventually find their place in the world, they need to learn how to develop their voice at a young age.

“You can’t be so afraid that life will break them that you don’t prepare them for life,” Obama stated.
