Kavanaugh to meet with Collins and several Democrats Tuesday

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Tuesday will meet with two key lawmakers ahead of a Sept. 4 confirmation hearing.

Kavanaugh plans sit-down talks with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.

Collins could be a deciding vote in Kavanaugh’s quest for confirmation, which requires a simple majority.

Collins, a pro-choice centrist, is currently undecided and is weighing Kavanaugh’s views on the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision as well as his opinion on the healthcare law’s coverage of pre-existing conditions, which could be tested before the high court.

Schumer had been holding out on talks with Kavanaugh because he wants Republicans to agree to turn over more documents relating to Kavanaugh’s three years working for former President George W. Bush.

Democrats announced last week they are prepared to sue for the information if they cannot gain access through public information laws.

Kavanaugh on Tuesday will also meet with Sens. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., who is a top Democrat on the Judiciary panel, which will question Kavanaugh next month.
