2020 presidential front-runner Joe Biden said in an interview with the Iowa Starting Line Friday that he does not have plans to expand the Supreme Court should he become president.
Biden’s comments come as many of his opponents have already argued in favor of expanding the number of seats on the Supreme Court.
“No, I’m not prepared to go on and try to pack the court, because we’ll live to rue that day,” he stated. “I’m not going to seat anybody on the court, lower court or otherwise, who doesn’t support the basic fundamental notion that there’s an inherent right to privacy.”
Democratic presidential candidates Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Beto O’Rourke, Pete Buttigieg, and Kirsten Gillibrand have all expressed a willingness to expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court.
Fellow candidate New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker also suggested setting term limits for Supreme Court justices in a March interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews.
The former vice president also said in the interview that he’d consider renominating Merrick Garland for the court after he never received a Senate hearing because then-President Barack Obama nominated him in the year before the 2016 presidential election.
