Fox News’s Chris Wallace said he wished his experience moderating the first presidential debate mirrored the final one on Thursday that was moderated by NBC’s Kristen Welker.
“First of all, I’m jealous,” Wallace said when discussing his thoughts on the contest. “I would’ve liked to have been able to moderate that debate and to get a real exchange of views instead of hundreds of interruptions. I thought it was a good debate. A good, substantive debate. Two very competing visions for the country.”
The debate in Nashville, Tennessee, was the final time for President Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden to square off before Election Day in less than two weeks.
The Commission on Presidential Debates had instituted new rules for the final debate, including having the microphone for one contender cut off during the other debater’s opening two-minute response to each question, after the first debate was full of interruptions and cross-talk between the two candidates, making it difficult to understand their plans for the nation.
The result was a far less chaotic affair than the first debate, with both candidates being able to answer questions in a timely manner, and Welker has been widely praised on social media for her handling of the event.
Wallace said he thought Biden did a better job laying out his specific plans, while Trump was more fluid in his presentation.
He also thought the questions played more to Biden’s strengths, putting Trump on the defense for many of his answers.
