Gorsuch on whether he’ll buck Trump: ‘That’s a softball’

Judge Neil Gorsuch told the Senate Judiciary Committee he would have no problem bucking President Trump as a Supreme Court justice, if need be.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley kicked off Tuesday’s hearings on Gorsuch’s nomination by asking about judicial independence and whether Gorsuch would be willing to rule against Trump.

“That’s a softball, Mr. Chairman,” Gorsuch said. “I am heartened by the support I have received from people who recognize there is no such thing as a Republican judge or Democratic judge.”

Gorsuch cited his law clerks’ analysis of his cases in determining that he was just as likely to dissent from GOP-appointed judges’ opinions as he was from Democratic judges’ opinions.
