Memorial service held for departed city manager

Friends, co-workers and family held services for Daniel McKeever on Thursday, remembering the long-time Falls Church city manager who died of melanoma last week.

About 350 people gathered at the Community Center gymnasium to remember the late administrator, said Falls Church spokeswoman Nicole Gobbo.

Former and current mayors, city staff and others who knew McKeever spoke at theservices.

“It was a very moving and tremendous tribute to him,” said Council Member Dan Maller on Friday.

Council members said it’s too early to discuss talk of the search for a new permanent city manager. Assistant City Manager Wyatt Shields took the position in an interim role while McKeever was receiving treatment.

“[The services] made one realize, in the most positive way, what a big pair of shoes there is to fill,” said Council Member Hal Lippman.

“This was an extraordinary man.”

Funeral services for the family will be held privately out of state, Gobbo said.
