Three inches of snow get feds three-hour work delay

Federal workers were granted a three-hour delay in getting to work on Tuesday, after Winter Storm Stella dumped about three inches of slow and sleet on the nation’s capital.

“Federal agencies in the Washington, D.C., are open under 3 hours delayed arrival and employees have the option for unscheduled leave or unscheduled telework,” the Office of Personnel Management said.

“Employees should plan to arrive for work no more than 3 hours later than they would be expected to arrive,” OPM said.

The storm did cancel thousands of flights, which prompted the House to scrap work on Tuesday. But as senators were mostly in town already, the Senate had a brief work day Monday, and was expected to convene at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The storm was expected to hammer the Northeast with heavy snow Tuesday, which could have repercussions for work in Washington later in the week.

Metro trains in and around Washington were operating on a weekend schedule Tuesday as another few inches of snow and sleet were expected to fall through the middle of Tuesday.

Many area schools were also closed, further complicating the work day for federal workers.
