Michelle Obama: Now U.S. knows ‘what not having hope feels like’

First Lady Michelle Obama said her husband’s legacy will be the hope he brought to the country, and indicated that the election of Donald Trump is a stark contrast that will result in a wave of hopelessness in the U.S.

“We feel the difference now,” she told Oprah Winfrey in an interview, a portion of which was released Friday. “Now, we’re feeling what not having hope feels like. Hope is necessary, it’s a necessary concept.”

“And, Barack didn’t talk about hope because he thought it was a nice slogan to get votes,” Obama added. “He and I and so many believed what else do you have if you don’t have hope?”

The full interview will air at 8 p.m. Monday on CBS.
