House Speaker Paul Ryan said he’s happy with an online poll showing voters trust Donald Trump over him to lead the Republican Party.
“I hope it’s Donald Trump, he’s getting the nomination,” Ryan said when asked about the NBC News/Wall Survey Monkey poll.
The poll of voters found 58 percent said they “trust” Trump to “lead the Republican Party,” compared to 39 percent who prefer Ryan to lead the GOP.
Ryan declined to comment on recent stories about Trump’s relationships with women and comments he has made about women. Instead, he said he is focused on “unifying our party … around our commonly held principles.”
Ryan said the discussions with the Trump campaign have just started and are “productive.”
“We realize that to pretend party unification after one of the most divisive primaries in history is to go into the fall half strength,” Ryan added.
