President Trump suggested he could make his first appearance as commander in chief at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner now that the organization has someone other than a comedian to headline the annual event.
“So-called comedian Michelle Wolf bombed so badly last year at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner that this year, for the first time in decades, they will have an author instead of a comedian. Good first step in comeback of a dying evening and tradition! Maybe I will go?” Trump tweeted late Tuesday.
[Opinion: Comedians aren’t funny anymore, so the WHCA wisely chose a historian instead]

The organization announced Monday that author Ron Chernow will be the featured speaker at the 2019 event. It’s the first time since 2003, when Ray Charles performed, that a comedian will not headline the annual dinner.
“While I have never been mistaken for a stand-up comedian, I promise that my history lesson won’t be dry,” Chernow said of being asked to speak about the importance of the First Amendment.
Wolf’s routine earlier this year left many conservatives fuming after she ripped Trump and mocked White House press secretary Sarah Sanders’ appearance.
