Twins born prematurely after traffic crash; 1 in critical condition

An infant is in critical condition after a mother gave birth prematurely following a serious traffic accident.

The crash occurred when an ambulance struck a a 2008 four-door Mazda that was turning onto Chain Bridge Road from the Tysons Corner Center near Tysons Boulevard at about 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Fairfax County police said.

Police said the driver of the Mazda, a 28-year-old woman who was nearly nine months pregnant, was taken to a hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. She gave birth to twins prematurely. The twins first appeared to be in good condition, but one baby worsened and is now in critical condition, police said Friday morning.

The ambulance driver, a 39-year-old man, and its passengers were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
