Seattle officials are calling on Washington state to create a $100 million coronavirus relief fund for illegal immigrants.
The Seattle City Council passed a resolution Monday asking Gov. Jay Inslee, a Democrat, and other state lawmakers to create a “Washington Worker Relief Fund” to the tune of $100 million aimed at providing benefits to illegal immigrants, according to the Seattle Times.
The nonbinding resolution passed the City Council by a unanimous 9-0 vote and will be signed by Mayor Jenny Durkan.
“Looking out for the most vulnerable in our community is even more critical in times of crisis,” Durkan said Monday. “It is all the more important to ensure we are not pushing people further into the shadows.”
Illegal immigrants in the state are currently not eligible for coronavirus relief funds.
Democratic lawmakers across the country have been attempting to provide taxpayer-funded coronavirus relief to illegal immigrants. Since mid-April, California Gov. Gavin Newsom has been pushing for millions of dollars in taxpayer-funded coronavirus relief to illegal immigrants.
Democrats in Congress, led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, included $300 million of funding for refugees in their coronavirus relief package in late March.
