Fox News’ John Roberts defends NBC, CNN after getting skewered for his silence during Trump attack

Fox News chief White House correspondent John Roberts on Friday said it was “unfair” of President Trump to single out CNN as “fake news” after Roberts was widely condemned for failing to defend the cable news network after Trump criticized the network at a press conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May.

“In today’s press conference, I paused while my colleague from CNN went back and forth with President Trump over a question,” Roberts said in a statement issued by Fox News. “When it became clear that the president wasn’t going to entertain a question from him, I proceeded with my question, as did my fellow colleagues in the press corps.”

“I also used to work at CNN,” he continued. “There are some fine journalists who work there and risk their lives to report on stories around the world. To issue a blanket condemnation of the network as ‘fake news’ is also unfair.”

Earlier, Trump and CNN’s chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta traded barbs after the president refused to take questions from him at a joint media opportunity hosted by the world leaders following a series of bilateral meetings in the U.K.

“CNN is fake news. I don’t take questions from CNN,” Trump said. “John Roberts of Fox. Let’s go to a real network.”

“Thank you, Mr. President,” Roberts replied.

Roberts’ reaction to the exchange drew ire from political pundits, such as former Obama White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer.

But the most stinging rebukes came from fellow journalists, including CNN’s chief Washington correspondent Jake Tapper and CNN media reporter Hadas Gold.
