A pro-Trump House Republican and outspoken critic of President Joe Biden’s border policies now opposes the idea of impeachment, pivoting with GOP leaders who are less interested in the controversial political move.
Rep. Mayra Flores, a Latina who won a special election in June for the Brownsville/South Padre Island border district in South Texas, said in a Showtime interview that attempting to remove Biden from the White House for any number of reasons would be a mistake because it is not what people need the most.
“We should not be impeaching President Biden. People are struggling right now. They’re asking us to put our differences aside and to focus on the American people,” Flores said in an interview on The Circus that aired Sunday.
“They’re not waking up thinking about, you know, the social issues that Washington wants us to focus on,” Flores said. “No, they’re waking up concerned how they’re going to make it at the end of the month.”
House Republicans have tried 14 times to impeach Biden and his officials as of early October, according to an Axios count.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told CNN on Sunday that Republicans will prioritize investigations and hearings into the Biden administration’s handling of the Afghanistan troop pullout in mid-2021, the origin of the coronavirus, and education matters. But McCarthy could face severe pressure from the ultraconservative margin of his party to focus on impeachment.
The anti-impeachment sentiment could make Flores more appealing to independents ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections despite her having espoused conservative policy views in line with former President Donald Trump.

Flores tried last month to join the Congressional Hispanic Caucus but was denied because the House group is only meant for Democrats.
