FILLMORE, Calif. (AP) — Crews searching for an off-duty Arcadia firefighter who went missing last Friday in Los Padres National Forest say they spotted the man’s dog.
Michael Herdman was on a backpacking trip with a friend near the Tar Creek trail when he went running after his dog and disappeared in rugged terrain. He was barefoot and wearing only shorts and a T-shirt.
Ventura County sheriff’s Sgt. Eric Buschow says searchers on Wednesday saw a dog that authorities are confident was Herdman’s German shorthaired pointer, Duke. However, the dog ran away.
Rescuers with air support are searching the mountains above Fillmore on Thursday for Herdman and Duke.
The 36-year-old Herdman is a firefighter and paramedic with the Arcadia Fire Department.
