Donald Trump released his first campaign ad on Thursday featuring him speaking a different language, during which he wishes Indian-Americans happiness as they celebrate the annual Hindu festival of Diwali.
“The Indian and Hindu community will have a true friend in the White House,” says the Republican presidential nominee in the 30-second spot. “We will defeat radical Islamic terrorism.”
“Ab ki baar Trump sarkar,” Trump adds in Hindi, which translates to “this time, a Trump government.” The same slogan was used by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his 2014 election campaign: “Ab ki baar Modi sarkar.”
The ad comes weeks after Trump attended a charity event hosted by the Republican Hindu Coalition, a group of right-leaning Indian-Americans that has enthusiastically supported his candidacy. Most of the footage included in the ad is taken from Trump’s appearance at the event.
“Great for America. Great for US-India relationship,” the screen reads at the end of the ad while Indian music plays in the background.
The Trump campaign reportedly plans to run the ad on Indian-American channels 20 times a day between now and the Nov. 8 election.
“We wanted to reach out to Hindu-Americans to let everybody know that he loves Hindus, he loves India and he is looking forward to getting that message out that he identifies with Hindus,” Shalli Kumar, who heads Trump’s Indian-American Advisory Committee, told Buzzfeed News.
