Party on, D.C.

For one night, and one night only, you’ll be able to party until 4 a.m. in the District.

The D.C. Council passed an emergency bill Tuesday allowing city bars to stay open to 4 a.m. when the clocks spring forward an hour on March 13. To do so, the bars will have to pay a $100 fee.

Ward 1 Councilman Jim Graham introduced the bill, saying he had heard complaints from bar owners and late-night drinkers alike that they lose an hour of service in the spring when the clocks spring forward for Daylight Savings. One night every spring at 2 a.m., the clocks suddenly jump to 3 a.m. — which is the time D.C. bars must close their doors.

At-large Councilman Phil Mendelson voted against the measure Tuesday, saying the bars get the hour back in the fall when we roll the clocks back an hour.
