Republicans order Biden’s DHS Secretary Mayorkas to resign or face impeachment

The most senior Republican in the House demanded President Joe Biden’s Homeland Security secretary to resign or face impeachment proceedings in the new year.

“Today, I am calling on the secretary to resign,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told reporters in El Paso, Texas. “We cannot and must not remain in that position.”

McCarthy said that if Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas does not leave his post by Jan. 3, when the new session in Congress commences, House Republicans “will investigate every order, every action, and every failure and determine whether we can begin impeachment inquiry.”

The GOP-controlled House will also force members of Congress to travel down to the southern border for committee hearings, he added.

McCarthy said it will take some of the burden off GOP Rep. Tony Gonzales, whose district runs along 800 miles of the 2,000-mile border. He has hosted 16 trips for members to visit the border in the last few years.

“After Jan. 3, no longer will members have to come down to the border to tour. We will hold our hearings at the border so the Democrats can no longer hide from the crisis they created,” McCarthy said.

Six other Republicans joined McCarthy on the pre-Thanksgiving trip, including four members from Texas.

“We have talked to dozens of Border Patrol agents today,” said Texas Rep. August Pfluger during the press conference. “Not a single agent today has claimed that the border is secure. In fact, they say it is the most open that it has been in their career.”

The delegation’s visit to El Paso in particular was not coincidental. Border Patrol’s El Paso sector is one of nine sectors on the southern border. Last month, federal police encountered 53,284 illegal immigrants, most of whom came over between the ports of entry. Last month’s number is 10 times higher than three years ago in October 2019.
