Trump aide: ‘Ability’ to get health insurance is the focus, not numbers covered

Nationwide health insurance coverage numbers are “interesting” but are not the goal of the Trump administration in replacing Obamacare, President Trump’s top economic advisor said Sunday.

“The numbers of who’s covered and who’s not covered — that’s interesting, and I know that may make some headlines, but what we care about is people’s ability to get healthcare” and to see doctors, said Gary Cohn, the director of Trump’s National Economic Council, speaking on “Fox News Sunday.”

On the campaign trail, Trump promised universal coverage, saying that he differed from other Republicans on that point. Host Chris Wallace pressed Cohn to say whether Trump would now back the Republican reform plan if the Congressional Budget Office said that it would take away coverage from people who now have it.

“We’re offering coverage to everyone” through Medicaid and tax credits for private insurance, Cohn responded.

“In the past, the CBO score has been meaningless,” he also remarked.
