A new Fox News poll shows Joe Biden with a significant lead over President Trump in key battleground states.
According to the poll released Thursday, Biden is up by 11 percentage points in Pennsylvania, 13 points in Minnesota, and 9 points in Michigan.
The RealClearPolitics average, without the new poll factored in, currently puts Biden 6.6 points ahead in Pennsylvania and 7.7 points ahead in Michigan. There is no average yet in Minnesota, as there hasn’t been enough polling conducted there to establish one.
At this time in the 2016 election cycle, then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton was only polling 3 to 5 points ahead of Trump in Pennsylvania. Although Clinton saw a polling bump in the state days later, her numbers declined again soon afterward.
In Michigan, during this time last cycle, polls were fluctuating but put Clinton ahead of Trump by roughly 9 to 11 points. Very few polls were taken for Minnesota in 2016, particularly during May, June, July, and August, so a comparison for this time period is unclear.
As the 2016 election grew nearer, the gap between the two candidates diminished significantly. Trump will have to make similar headway this year, particularly in battleground states, if he desires to win in November. Currently, the RealClearPolitics average puts Biden 9 points ahead of Trump nationally.
