Fire destroys Howard turkey farm barn

An early morning fire destroyed a popular turkey farm barn in Howard County Friday, causing more than $1 million in damage, fire officials said.

Shortly after midnight, firefighters responded to the Maple Lawn Turkey Farm at the intersection of Route 216 and Lime Kiln Road in Fulton, said Howard County Fire and Rescue spokesman Bill Mould.

Forty-five firefighters from Howard and Montgomery counties battled the blaze for several hours. The roads were opened the road at about 6 a.m. in time for morning rush hour, Mould said.

The fire destroyed the barn and farm equipment in the barn, which is owned by the Iager family. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to several adjacent buildings that houses bulls, Mould said.

No one was injured in the blaze.

No cause has been determined, and the fire is still under investigation, he said. There were storms in the area, but lightning is not believed to be the cause, he said.

Parts of the farm have been developed and more is expected to be built up as part of the new Maple Lawn development.
