Hillary Clinton’s speech in North Carolina on Wednesday was loaded with zingers.
It seems Clinton’s campaign is serving up her new-found knack for dad jokes in response to Donald Trump’s array of vulgarities and insults. But yesterday was something special: Her millennial gags all played on economic policies—which made for some groaners.
“We can’t let Donald Trump bankrupt America the way he bankrupted his casinos,” she said after a defense of her sketchy non-profit. “We need to write a new chapter in the American dream, and it can’t be Chapter 11!”
Punny.
She used a similar line the day before, so we can be sure it tested well with audiences (the Clinton camp are known to be obsessive planners). Her team then tweeted out the bankruptcy gag for good measure.
In her Wednesday speech, Clinton also riffed on Donald Trump’s stale phrase from his television show The Apprentice while discussing job growth.
“Maybe we shouldn’t expect better from someone who’s most famous words are, ‘You’re Fired!'” (wait for applause) “I do have a jobs program, and as president, I’m going to make sure that you hear, ‘You’re Hired!'”
But perhaps the most cringeworthy moment was her reading “sigh” off of a teleprompter — which was almost as uncomfortable as her campaign-constructed “delete your account” tweet.
“All he can do is he’s trying to distract us. That’s even why he’s attacking my faith,” she said, and paused for dramatic effect. “Sigh.”
Sigh, indeed.
