Pelosi celebrates court ruling, pans ‘incoherent,’ ‘incompetent’ immigration ban

BALTIMORE — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi spoke out in support Friday of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeal’s ruling the night before, which denied President Trump’s request to reinstate his executive order banning travel to the United States from seven Muslim-majority countries.

Speaking to reporters Friday morning, Pelosi continued to slam Trump’s executive order, calling it “incoherent” and “incompetent,” while arguing that the ban does not make American safer, as Trump insists.

“The court ruling last night, unanimously, that was very important. The court ruling indicated, once again, that what the president did was unconstitutional and indeed, in my view, immoral,” Pelosi said, noting that the morality part of it was her opinion and not the court’s.

“It shows the American people that whatever you think about the ban, how the president proceeded with this was not only incompetent, but it was strategically incoherent,” Pelosi said. “Selling the issue that it makes us safe if you don’t really know too much about the issue and the president of the United States is speaking has a market, but he has a responsibility to protect the American people and protect and defend the American people and the Constitution of the United States. He failed in doing that. The court’s rightly ruled, and I salute — and then he said ‘we’ll see you in court,’ so we’ll see what that means.”

The 3-0 ruling by the court was immediately slammed by Trump, who tweeted minutes after it came down that he would “SEE YOU IN COURT,” pointing to his intention to challenge the ruling further and reiterating that the security of the U.S. is at stake. He also told reporters that the ruling was a “political decision.

“We have a situation where the security of our country is at stake, and it’s a very, very serious situation. So we look forward, as I just said, to seeing them in court,” Trump said.

The White House’s decision to appeal the ruling could result in the case being taken up by the Supreme Court.
