Anne Boone-Simanski: Judge candidates kick up their heels

Did you know that way back in 1776, Maryland?s constitution helped establish the Orphans? Court, which today is a vital ? and busy ? part of our state government? Much of its efforts go into solving estate disputes and wading through wills and property transfers. Three judges sit on the Orphans? Court in Baltimore City and in each of the state?s counties, except in Harford and Montgomery, where circuit court judges handle the workload.

It can be a sticky mess, but we won?t get into that in this column. We?re much more interested in the fun stuff, which is what three Baltimore County attorneys provided by hosting a fundraiser Tuesday night at the Bay Cafe in Canton as part of their campaigns for judges of the Orphans? Court.

What a beautiful setting ? some may say too much so for politics, but supporters of William R. Evans, Myles Friedman and Colleen Cavanaugh made sure the candidates were not alone at the “Jamaica-Me-Crazy”-themed party. This jammin? session had Gerry Stevens, Bob Page, Peter Gargano and Emma Twiggs Clark tapping their toes, while tasting Bay Cafe?sdelicious treats. Family-law attorney Mike Lawlor held court of his own, telling us “your paper is so much better than … ” Well, you know.

It wasn?t all about Baltimore County, however, as city Orphans? Court candidate Peter Del Pizzo III dropped by. As I was talking with candidate Cavanaugh, I happened to spot a TV just in time to see her look-alike sister Kerry, who was reporting a story for WBAL. Also showing support for the contenders was attorney ? and great gal ? Mary Loker.

Coldwell Banker celebrates 100 years

Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage is celebrating 100 years in business, and to honor this milestone, it will participate in a “100 Habitat for Humanity Homes” program that will run through the end of the year. But the agents at the Columbia office aren?t wasting any time. Coldwell?s Annette L. Fisher told me of an upcoming event, where Realtors are volunteering their efforts to raise $80,000 for this wonderful cause. The Columbia, Catonsville and Ellicott City/Chatham offices will host an art and silent auction Aug. 18 at Kahler Hall, which is located at 5440 Old Tucker Road in Columbia.
