What do Sade + Md. road cops have in common?

Maryland cops are channeling the 1980s with a new campaign: the “Smooth Operator” program.

No, they aren’t necessarily encouraging drivers to listen to Sade’s mellow song from 1984, but they are encouraging them to chill out as though they were.

The Maryland Transportation Authority Police said Monday they are stepping up enforcement this week as part of the Smooth Operator program to target aggressive drivers. It’s the first phase of the program that runs until September.

Aggressive driving is when “an individual commits a combination of moving traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property,” according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That federal agency blames aggressive driving for causing one-third of traffic crashes — and two-thirds of subsequent deaths from those crashes.

So turn down the sissy bounce and Lady Gaga, and mellow out on that drive.
