House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters that Democrats will hold a press conference Friday about the 25th Amendment, which outlines the line of succession behind the president.
Pelosi, a California Democrat, didn’t say Democrats plan to talk about how to remove President Trump. Instead, she suggested the event would highlight criticism of the Trump administration’s response to the recent coronavirus outbreak that has spread through the White House.
“Come here tomorrow,” Pelosi teased to reporters Thursday. “We’re going to talk about the 25th Amendment.”
The amendment establishes the line of succession “in case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation.”
Pelosi wouldn’t clarify whether she is interested in removing the president from office. Instead, she called on the White House to reveal the timeline of Trump’s infection with coronavirus, which she said the president “refuses to answer.”
According to the White House, he tested positive via a rapid test on Thursday and then received a second test. Trump tweeted around 1 a.m. Friday morning that he and First Lady Melania Trump tested positive for coronavirus.
The virus has spread through the White House. An ABC News report cited an internal memo claiming 34 people connected to the White House have contracted coronavirus.
“So let us see a date a time when you last tested negative before you admitted to this virus,” Pelosi said.
