Police identify man found in lake as suspect in attempted murder case

Police have found the body of a man wanted for attempted murder, Montgomery County Police said.

The body, which was found in the Triadelphia reservoir, has been identified as that of Robert Lewis Thornton, 46, of Gaithersburg.

Thornton had been wanted on a number of charges, including attempted first- and second-degree murder, stemming from an incident on May 12 in Howard County.

At approximately 11:14 p.m. that day Howard County Police responded to Brighton Dam Road in Clarksville near the county line for a reported assault.

Police believe that Thornton and a Howard County woman in her 40s had an argument in a neighboring county. As the victim left the area in her vehicle, Thornton allegedly followed her.

Howard County Police believe he rear-ended her and then proceeded to chase her into a wooded area, threaten her, and cut her in the neck.

He was last seen fleeing the area on foot, police said.
