The U.S. military conducted an airstrike Monday in Syria that was intended to kill a senior al Qaeda leader, the Pentagon has confirmed.
“We can confirm we targeted a prominent al Qaeda member in Syria, and we are assessing the results of the operation at this time,” spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis told reporters at the Pentagon. “We are not able to discuss the specific operations or release information about this until we can confirm it was a successful strike.”
The Pentagon would not confirm if the strike was conducted by manned or unmanned aircraft.
“Each time we remove a significant al Qaeda leader, we disrupt and degrade their command and control and halt their expansion,” Davis said. “This is another example of our government’s resolve to track down those whose objective is bringing terror to others.”
