Louie Gohmert: Michael Cohen ‘needed a colonoscopy’ from lawmakers

Michael Cohen should have had a colonoscopy, Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, joked Friday.

“He needed a colonoscopy,” Gohmert said when a Fox News host changed topics on-air from how a Democratic-controlled House will likely investigate the Trump administration at the expense of legislating to disputed reports Cohen may have been in Prague to liaise with Russian officials during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Gohmert, a House Judiciary Committee member, said he believed congressional oversight was “healthy” for the country but feared House Democrats “won’t be able to help themselves.”

“You don’t need a colonoscopy after every minor decision, and I think that’s where they are headed,” the Texas Republican said.

Gohmert’s quip follows a McClatchy article Thursday reporting that cellphone signals and intercepted chatter between Russians could be evidence that Cohen was in or near the Czech capital in the summer of 2016. It was suggested in the Trump-Russia dossier that Cohen was close to the eastern European city to meet with Kremlin agents so they could discuss how to downplay the “liaison” between the Trump campaign and Moscow. No other news outlet has been able to verify McClatchy’s story, and Cohen has denied the claims.

Cohen pleaded guilty last month to lying to Congress about a Trump Organization real estate deal as part of Mueller’s federal Russia investigation. He was sentenced to two months in prison for the charge, which will be served concurrently with the three years he received through the case he faced in New York for campaign finance violations and tax and bank fraud.

A colonoscopy is an invasive procedure that allows doctors to check for large intestinal or rectal changes or abnormalities.
