Anne Arundel?s “insufficient budget proposal” has led to an immediate freeze on all nonclassroom school positions, Schools Superintendent Kevin Maxwell said Monday.
The open positions cannot be filled without direct approval from Maxwell, who said he would grant exceptions sparingly.
The freeze was in response to County Executive John Leopold?s proposed $812 million budget, which is about $130 million less than the amount requested by the school board, school officials said.
“We are going to need to makesome serious cuts and those cuts will hurt the children we educate every day,” Maxwell said in a statement.
The proposed budget is before the County Council, which must adopt a spending plan by the end of the month.
The school system has about 50 unfilled nonclassroom positions, school officials said.
