‘You may never be released’: Teenager sentenced for throwing child off balcony of art gallery

A teenager in London has been sentenced to at least 15 years in prison for trying to murder a 6-year-old child by throwing him off a 10-story balcony.

Jonty Bravery, 18, pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder in London court. Bravery said he threw the boy, a tourist, off the viewing platform at the Tate Modern art gallery to kill him because he wanted to be on the news.

During the August 2019 attack, the child fell five stories from the 10-story balcony and managed to survive. However, he suffered serious injuries, including broken bones and a brain bleed. Justice Maura McGowan did not mince words when she handed down Bravery’s sentence on Friday.

Jonty Bravery was convicted of attempted murder for throwing the child off the balcony.

“I cannot emphasize too clearly that this is not a 15-year sentence. The sentence is detention for life. The minimum term is 15 years. Your release cannot be considered before then. You may never be released,” she said.

“You had intended to kill someone that day,” McGowan added. “The injuries you caused are horrific. That little boy has suffered permanent and life-changing injuries.”
