New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Hillary Clinton proved herself to be as progressive as Bernie Sanders when she was first lady, and said she would show that side of her again once elected president.
De Blasio pointed to Clinton’s effort on healthcare as an example, in a Thursday morning interview on MSNBC.
“The time she took on the health insurance industry. … It was a battle royale, it was as if Bernie Sanders’ ideas were being played out from the White House,” he said. “Well, I think that is going to happen again under Hillary Clinton.”
He said it was a “shock to the system” when a first lady decided to play a “major, substantive role” in the policy process, and said that’s why he’s supporting her. “The fact is she is tough enough to take on the most powerful interests in this country and she has done it throughout her life,” he said.
