Body of 8-year-old great-grandson of Robert F Kennedy found after canoe accident

Authorities found the body of the great-grandson of former Sen. Robert F. Kennedy after a canoe accident.

Maryland Natural Resources Police found the body of 8-year-old Gideon McKean on Wednesday afternoon, approximately one week after the boy and his mother, Maeve Kennedy McKean, 40, disappeared in a canoeing accident. Divers reportedly found the body around 1:40 p.m. in 25 feet of water, over 2 miles south of his grandmother’s residence in Shady Side, Maryland. Maeve Kennedy McKean was found one day earlier, 2,000 feet away from her son.

The two were playing outside while quarantining with their family at the Chesapeake Bay. According to David McKean, Gideon’s father, one of them kicked a ball into the water and proceeded to retrieve it in a canoe.

“They got into a canoe, intending simply to retrieve the ball, and somehow got pushed by wind or tide into the open bay,” he said in a Facebook post, according to Fox Carolina.

According to his family, Gideon McKean was a star student-athlete who enjoyed playing soccer and golf.
