Officials from the U.S. Department of State were deployed to Kansas following a break-in late last year at a storage facility where Secretary Mike Pompeo was keeping campaign materiel.
Local media reports detailed a chaotic scene last November, when more than 20 City of Wichita police officers responded to a burglary at a storage facility in Sedwick County.
“I half expected Black Hawk helicopters to show up,” witness Bradley Sampson told the Kansas City Star. “Heaven forbid they take some of his bottled water or campaign signs.”
A State Department official was deployed to the facility to conduct an investigation since the incident involved the secretary and thus could be a matter of national security.
The suspect, who remains at large, apparently used a grinding tool to commit the break-in, police said.
The unit contained various Pompeo campaign items such as tables and signs.
Officials concluded Pompeo was not targeted by the burglars but was rather the victim of a random crime.
