While en route to the G-20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s plane diverted from NATO countries.
The plane made a 300-mile detour to avoid flying over Poland and the Baltic states, Reuters reported.
The direct route would have been over Belarus, which has friendly relations with Russia, and Poland, a former Soviet Union state which has been critical of Russia.
The plane flew over the Baltic Sea, into neutral Finland and Sweden before entering NATO members Denmark and Germany.
“The (safety) measures which are taken are expedient measures,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a conference call with reporters, according to the report.
Other Russia government planes have flown over Polish airspace recently, the report said.
