Trump privately rekindles idea of firing Jeff Sessions: Report

President Trump privately reupped the idea of firing Attorney General Jeff Sessions this month with his aides and personal lawyers, according to a new report.

Trump’s attorneys persuaded him to back off while special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation continues, three anonymous sources told the Washington Post, but the president has still issued several public attacks on Sessions.

Senate Republicans have warned Trump that they do not feel they would be able to confirm another attorney general should he fire Sessions. However, some lawmakers have seemed to warm to the idea.

“We wish the best for him, but as any administration would show, Cabinet members seldom last the entire administration, and this is clearly not an exception,” Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., said Tuesday.

Last week, Trump dared Sessions to open up investigations against Democrats to keep the Department of Justice free from corruption.

“Look into all of the corruption on the ‘other side,”” Trump posted to Twitter Friday. “Come on Jeff, you can do it, the country is waiting!”

Sessions has recused himself from Mueller’s investigation into Russian collusion with the Trump campaign. Trump says he would have never appointed Sessions as attorney general had he known he was going to do so.
