Hillary: Solution to ISIS and Brussels Attack Is Our Visa Program

On NBC’s Today Show, Hillary Clinton phoned in to chat with Savannah Guthrie as cries of the wounded and dying in Brussels set the scene in the background.

GUTHRIE: Nonetheless, I think we all agree that ISIS is at the heart of this. And if you were president today, what would be doing differently to get at this root cause?

CLINTON: Well, Savannah, you’re right that we’re not sure yet. But it’s also true that, you know, we have been, uh, confronting the threat of terrorism for, uh, quite some time, and this is the latest terrible manifestation of it. Uh, we’ve gotta tighten our security, I’ve talked about our visa system and our passenger name records system. When I was secretary of state we had, uh, some difficulties with our European friends. Uh, because they were reluctant to, uh, impose the kind of strict standards we were looking for. After Paris, that has changed and we need to, uh, do much more to tighten things up. And I know our security professionals are working, uh, to do that. But it’s unrealistic to say we’re going to completely shut down our borders to everyone. That would, uh, you know, stop commerce, for example, and that’s not in anybody’s interest. But we have to a much better job in coordination with the Europeans on tracking and following anyone who has any connection, uh, with terrorist activity or terrorism.
