A top New York Police Department official said the suspect who allegedly killed at least 49 people in New Zealand on Friday was “borrowing from the ISIS playbook.”
“What I see is a lot of similarities to, in terms of tactics, you can see that the neo-Fascist groups, white supremacists, are borrowing from the ISIS playbook,” said NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Counterterrorism and Intelligence John Miller Friday on CBS This Morning.
The suspect reportedly livestreamed the attack on social media and had previously indicated his intentions on at least one online community he participated in regularly. Miler said the shooter used the same video streaming tactic, which the NYPD refers to as “dying live,” as the Islamic State.
“This was an ISIS tactic where they said, ‘If you’re going to do a mass-casualty attack, you should livestream it over social media,’” Miller said, adding that white supremacists and neo-fascist groups are adopting many of the tactics found in terrorist magazines.
The NYPD increased security around mosques in the city after the Christchurch shootings, according to NBC 4 New York. However, city officials have said there is no specific threat in New York City.
