Countdown to MLK Memorial

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Washington’s newest monument, is scheduled to be dedicated on Aug. 28, the 48th anniversary of the slain civil rights leader’s “I Have a Dream” speech given on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. But there will be plenty to do and see in the week leading up to the dedication.

Next Monday, the $120 million memorial situated on the Tidal Basin between the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials opens to the public, although the sculpture of King won’t be unveiled until the dedication. But if you’re a District resident, hold off until Tuesday, Aug. 23. That day is reserved as a special sneak peak for residents only, a kind of “thank you” to the city for hosting what are expected to be massive crowds for the dedication.

Other free events include a weeklong public exhibition at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and a Friday night vocal concert at the Kennedy Center. Tickets are also still available for other events, including a women’s luncheon and the Dream Gala scheduled the night before the Sunday dedication.
