Secretary of State Mike Pompeo did not meet Friday’s deadline for handing over Ukraine-related documents subpoenaed by House Democrats last week.
“Secretary Pompeo has failed to meet the deadline to produce documents required by the subpoena,” a House Foreign Affairs Committee aide told CNN. “However, the State Department has contacted the Committees on this matter and we hope the Department will cooperate in full promptly. Apart from the outstanding subpoena, we look forward to hearing from Ambassadors Sondland and Yovanovitch next week.”
House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Rep. Eliot Engel, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff, and House Oversight Chairman Rep. Elijah Cummings sent a letter to the State Department last week demanding that Pompeo turn over documents related to allegations that President Trump set up a quid pro quo deal with the president of Ukraine to investigate 2020 Democratic front-runner and former Vice President Joe Biden.
At the time, the Democratic chairmen also announced depositions with a number of State Department officials, including former Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker, Deputy Assistant Secretary George Kent, Counselor T. Ulrich Brechbuhl, and Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland.
Volker, who recently resigned, testified on Thursday.
The subpoena aimed at Pompeo came amid reports that he listened in on Trump’s July phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during which the president urged the foreign leader to probe Biden and his son Hunter for corruption. Pompeo responded by accusing Democrats of trying to “bully” his employees. On Wednesday, Pompeo confirmed that he was indeed “on the phone call” and reiterated his claim that Democrats are “bullying, intimidating State Department employees.”
The request for documents is a part of House Democrats’ recently launched impeachment inquiry into the president after his call with the foreign leader sparked an Intelligence Community whistleblower complaint.
