Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., said Monday that FBI Director Jim Comey’s decision to announce he was reopening the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails was a terrible error in judgment.
“I still have a tremendous amount of respect for Director Comey,” said the ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on MSNBC. “We all make mistakes, but this is a grave mistake.”
Cumming said that after MSNBC played a clip of him saying Comey was the “epitome of what a public servant is all about” after he announced that Clinton should not be indicted.
“I’m not one of these people going around saying that Comey is a bad person,” Cummings said. “I respect him just as I respected him on the day that clip was done.”
Cummings also said Comey had not contacted him before the letter, and called for Comey to release the information he has about the new emails and Donald Trump’s association with the Russian government.
“I’m not trying to interfere with an investigation,” he said. “Clearly he could bring some clarity to this situation before more voters go to the polls.”
