Tech turns troops into Spider-Man

Comic book movies tell us that with great power comes great responsibility, but the Pentagon’s top researchers hope that troops will also use the power behind Z-Man for greater combat effectiveness, too.

The Z-Man turns troops in to Spider-Man and allows them to climb straight up walls while wearing their combat gear. Troops can scale “typical building materials,” with the technology, including glass.

Troops used a hand piece on each hand to stick to the building surface, while loops hanging from each hand piece give the service members some place to put their feet.

Eugene Choi, the technical consultant for Z-Man, told the Washington Examiner that the technology was modeled after geckos.

Researchers from the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency showed off the Z-Man program at the Pentagon on Wednesday for a demo day where the Pentagon’s research arm displayed the work they’ve done on more than 60 programs.
