Harry Reid defends ‘Mexican judge’

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid attempted Friday to defend U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel from Donald Trump’s comments about his Mexican heritage, but ended up seeming to echo them.

“It shouldn’t be hard to condemn someone for making racist comments about a Mexican judge,” Reid, a Nevada Democrat, tweeted Friday evening.

Curiel was born in Indiana to two Mexican parents, and is therefore a natural-born American citizen.

House Speaker Paul Ryan criticized Trump’s comments on Curiel during a Friday radio interview. Ryan, who endorsed Trump earlier this week, told WISN’s Vicki McKenna Trump’s comment about the judge’s “Mexican heritage” was “out of left field.”
